It was Christmas morning. It was the 4th of July. It was New Year's Eve.
The Central Michigan gymnastics team walked into its brand-new locker room facilities on Monday, and the reviews were dynamite.
"It's really exciting," said senior Macey Hilliker, who fought back tears as she pointed out a photo on the wall of her and former teammates Courtney Campbell, Katy Clements, Bryttany Kaplan and Miranda Wieczorek. "That picture right there. My class is here with me in spirit.
"This is amazing. It literally leaves me speechless. We have our own bathroom, we have our own food station. I did not expect this at all. This is above and beyond. Amazing."
The upgraded rooms, part of a multi-stage, multi-year renovation of CMU Athletics facilities spearheaded by Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Alford, drew rave reviews from the student-athletes.
The 1,951-square-foot facility includes a spacious locker area, a television/lounge area, makeup mirrors, shower and restroom facilities. The program's 16 Mid-American Conference championships are commemorated in a splashy mural in the entry corridor.

"It's a lot of holidays rolled into one," longtime coach Jerry Reighard said. "Never would I have thought in my tenure that we would be given a facility, a locker room, that's this great. We have been pushed from room to room for a lot of years and to get this with the lockers and the meeting room, the makeup areas – I guess it's beyond what I thought could happen or would happen.
"It's going to be great for CMU gymnastics, it's great for these young women to experience this. It's fabulous."
