MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan field hockey fell short to Michigan State, 2-1, on Tuesday in a nonconference game at the CMU Field Hockey Complex.
Â
The Chippewas are 1-9. MSU (4-5) snapped a two-game losing streak.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
MSU scored midway through the second half to break a 1-1 tie and then held off the Chippewas the rest of the way.
Â
The Spartans broke through with a goal at the 37-minute mark. Just over three minutes later, Kady Gurtis tied it with her first goal of the season. Alli Huddleson and Georgina Minta assisted.
Â
NUMBERS
The Spartans finished with a 17-4 edge in shots. Both teams had six penalty corners.
Â
CMU COACH CATHERINE OSTOICH
"The effort was there. There were pushes and we saw moments. There were some really good things that the team did. We got a goal after them scoring first, which was great because we've been kind of in a rut for scoring goals. And we drew a lot of corners today, but we just need to get that last piece of execution.
Â
"There were moments of really great play and there were moments of breakdown. You need the moments of great play to outlast the moments of breakdown. The couple of times we broke down, we really broke down hard instead of a little breakdown. But, we had some great plays too, we just couldn't finish. So I'm happy with the push but obviously I want the W."
Â
AMADIO BACK IN GOAL
Lily Amadio made seven saves in her return to the goalkeeper position for the Chippewas after sitting out the past two games.
NEXT
The Chippewas are scheduled to play two games this weekend in Athens, Ohio. On Friday (6 p.m.), CMU will take on UC Davis in a nonconference game. The Aggies are scheduled to play Ohio on Thursday. They are 4-5 and coming off a 7-1 loss to Maine.
Â
On Sunday (noon), the Chippewas, who are 0-1 in the Mid-American Conference, will take on Ohio in a conference game. The Bobcats enter the weekend 2-4, 1-0 MAC. They defeated Appalachian State, 1-0, in their league opener last weekend.
