Chippewas fall into first-place tie atop MAC West
TOLEDO, Ohio – Central Michigan ran into a stingy defense and then failed to capitalize in the waning seconds on Wednesday in falling to Toledo, 62-59, in a Mid-American Conference women's basketball game before 3,603 at the Rockets' Savage Arena.
The outcome left the Chippewas and Rockets tied atop the MAC West. Both are 4-2 in league play. CMU is 13-5 overall; Toledo is 12-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas, who entered the night averaging 79.9 points per game, led 27-19 after one quarter, but were held to 32 points the rest of the way.
The lead changed hands 11 times before Toledo went ahead for good, 50-48, with under a minute to play in the third quarter. The Rockets upped their advantage to eight, 58-50, with under six minutes remaining in the game.
The Chippewas crept to within one, 60-59, on a Micaela Kelly fastbreak layup with 1:39 left. But it was CMU's last points of the night as the Chippewas missed their final four field goal attempts over the final 42 seconds.
