Chippewas take on Eastern Saturday at McGuirk
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Presley Hudson stands on the cusp of Central Michigan women's basketball history.
Her team is in the midst of the Mid-American Conference grind.
Hudson, a senior guard, needs five points on Saturday to become the program's all-time leading scorer. The Chippewas entertain Eastern Michigan in a 1 p.m. MAC game at McGuirk Arena.
Hudson has 2,002 points in her illustrious career and she is poised to surpass Crystal Bradford, who scored 2,006 for CMU from 2011-15.
It would be the latest achievement in a remarkable four-year run of Chippewa basketball, led by the likes of Hudson and fellow senior Reyna Frost, who earlier this season became the MAC's all-time leading rebounder.
"For Pres to score over 2,000 points and we still have a lot of basketball left to play, it just speaks to her work ethic," said Sue Guevara, who is in her 12th year as the Chippewas' head coach. "It speaks to how much she continues to improve, how much she practices different shots to put into her repertoire – I'm so happy for her.
"I don't know if it's been literally pressing on her, but I know once it's happened it's a great accomplishment. It's just like Reyna getting the rebounding record. Two very, very great accomplishments."
REBOUNDING
The Chippewas are looking to rebound from Wednesday's 62-59 loss at Toledo, a result that left CMU and the Rockets tied atop the MAC West at 4-2.
One-third of the way through the MAC schedule, the two-time defending league regular-season and defending MAC Tournament-champion Chippewas (13-5) are getting, night in and night out, exactly what they bargained for: Every opponent's best shot.
Both of CMU's league losses -- the other came at home to Miami (Ohio) – came by three points and both games came down to final seconds. The RedHawks are 12-4 overall, while Toledo is 12-5.
"We've lost to two really good basketball teams, Miami (Ohio) and Toledo, and I think that speaks to the conference," Guevara said. "It's a battle every night."
GOOD D
The Chippewas rank third in the conference and 24th nationally in scoring average at 78.6 points per game.
Eastern Michigan is fourth in the MAC in scoring defense. Through their first six league games, the Chippewas have played four of the top five defensive teams in the league (Miami, Toledo, Kent State and Akron).
SCOUTING
Eastern Michigan is 10-7, 3-3 after an 81-74 home win over Bowling Green on Wednesday.
The Eagles are 11th in the league in scoring at 63.3 points per game.
Senior guard Danielle Minot, in her second year at EMU after transferring from Syracuse, leads the Eagles in scoring at 15.0 points per game
THE CHIPPEWAS
Hudson ranks 18th in the nation in scoring at 20.4 points per game. Her career-long calling cards have been the long ball and free throws.
She is CMU's career leader in 3-pointers with 353 and ranks seventh in the nation this season with 63 and eighth with 3.5 per game. Hudson has knocked down 91.7 percent of her career free throw attempts; ironically, she is making 91.7 percent this season, ranking fifth in the nation in that category.
Hudson also ranks second in the MAC with 5.8 assists per game.
Frost ranks 10th in the nation at 12.1 rebounds per game and on Wednesday at Toledo notched her 15th double-double of the season. She ranks third in the nation in that category this season and her 48 career double-doubles is fifth among active players in Division I.
RANKINGS
CMU slipped to eighth this week in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll. The Chippewas were ranked fourth a week ago before their loss to Miami.
The MAC is well represented in the poll. Ohio is seventh and Buffalo is ninth while Toledo, Kent State and Miami are among others receiving votes.
NEXT
The Chippewas go to Bowling Green on Wednesday, Jan. 30, and then return to McGuirk Arena for a showdown with Buffalo on Saturday, Feb. 2. The Chippewas won two of three meetings with Buffalo – all were down-to-the-wire battles – last season, including the MAC Tournament championship game.
Buffalo was the lone MAC team to beat CMU in 2017-18 and both the Bulls and CMU advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament.
