The Chippewas host Kent State on Friday (4 p.m.)
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan field hockey team was defeated at home on Sunday, 6-1, by Ohio in a Mid-American Conference game at the CMU Field Hockey Complex.
The Chippewas are 2-12, 0-4 MAC. Ohio is 6-5, 3-1.
How It Happened
The Bobcats took the lead less than two minutes into the game and never looked back, building a 4-0 halftime lead.
The Chippewas got on the board with Callie Quinn goal off a corner in the fourth period. It was Quinn's first goal of the season.
Karynne Baker had two goals for the Bobcats. CMU goalkeeper Abigail Ebersole tallied eight saves.
Converting Opportunities
Ohio finished with an 18-14 edge in shots, a statistic that, despite the loss, is encouraging to Chippewa coach Catherine Ostoich.
By the same token, the Chippewas need to make something out of those opportunities. The Chippewas had a season-high 11 shots on goal and nine penalty corners, their second-highest total this season.
"We just don't have that extra effort to want to score a goal," Ostoich said. "So, we've got to figure out, are we going to put some new personnel out there to figure out who wants to score a goal? Because we need people that will literally sacrifice their body to get the job done.
"We had so many corners, and we did not capitalize. That's what we'll be working on this week."
Next
The Chippewas will entertain MAC-leading Kent State (8-5, 3-0) on Friday, Oct. 18 (4 p.m.) at the CMU Field Hockey Complex. A dedication ceremony for the renaming of the facility to Cristy Freese Field is scheduled prior to the game.
Freese retired in June from CMU after 33-plus years as a coach and administrator. She coached the field hockey program for 29 years, becoming one of the longest-tenured coaches in university history, and then became the Executive Associate Athletic Director of Sport Administration and Senior Women's Administrator in January, 2015.
The naming ceremony serves as one portion of the program's Alumnae Weekend, which begins at 2:30 p.m. with a pregame tailgate and concludes with dinner at 7 p.m. Max & Emily's in downtown Mount Pleasant.
