CMU soccer faces key weekend in Ohio, then returns home for final 3 league games
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan women's soccer team will travel to the state of Ohio for a pair of Mid-American Conference games this weekend.
Â
The first game is on Friday, Oct. 18 (4 p.m.) in Athens against Ohio. The Chippewas will then play at Kent State on Sunday, Oct. 20 (1 p.m.).
Â
Where They Stand
CMU sits at 7-2-2 with a 4-2 record in the MAC.
Â
The four conference wins puts CMU at 12 points, which is good for third in the MAC, behind Bowling Green and Ball State. The Falcons and Cardinals are scheduled to meet on Sunday at Bowling Green.
Â
Scouting
Ohio is 7-6-1, 2-3-1 MAC (seven points). Last weekend, the Bobcats tied at Akron and lost at home to Buffalo. Ohio started conference play 2-1, but is 0-2-1 since.
Â
Kent State is 5-6-2, 3-2-1 (10 points) after splitting games last weekend with Buffalo (loss) and Akron (win).
Â
Last Week
CMU took a heart-breaking double-overtime loss at Bowling Green 3-2 a week ago, and then bounced back with a 3-0 home win over Toledo. The three goals was a season high for the Chippewas.
Â
Leaders
Senior Marle Bringard leads CMU in goals with five. In just over 1,075 minutes in goal, Chippewa senior Zoie Reed has posted 55 saves and holds a .67 goals against average and a .873 save percentage.
Â
Alivia Milesky leads Ohio in goals with six. In more than 1,129 minutes in net, the Bobcats' Sydney Malham has 51 saves, a 1.67 goals against average, and a save percentage of .708 on the season.
Â
Karly Hellstrom, Cameron Shedenhelm, and Vital Kats are tied for the team lead in goals for Kent State with five on the season. In 1,210 minutes in net, Faith O'Neill has 53 saves, a 1.26 goals against average, and a save percentage of .757.
Â
MAC Grind
First-year CMU coach Jeremy Groves said the weekend shapes up like any other during the MAC season, a grind.
Â
"Ohio started off the season really well, and has struggled lately for whatever reason," he said. "They need points, we need points. … Kent State historically has always (been in the mix). I think that game is going to be important in terms of the top four seeds (in the MAC Tournament) to host a first-round game. Again, it's another big game against another good team."
Â
Next
The Chippewas' final three regular-season games will be at home. The first is Thursday, Oct. 24, against Buffalo; the second game is on Sunday, Oct. 27, against Akron; and the third is on Thursday Oct. 31, against Eastern Michigan.
Â
The MAC Tournament quarterfinals are scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 3. The top four teams in the final standings host quarterfinal games.
