CMU Soccer plays final MAC road game on Sunday at Kent State
ATHENS, Ohio. – Ohio scored in the second minute of each half on Friday in handing Central Michigan a 2-1 Mid-American Conference loss at the Bobcats' Chessa Field.
CMU is 7-3-2, 4-3 MAC with 12 points in the league standings. Ohio is 8-6-1, 3-3-1 with 10 points.
"(I didn't) see enough from them," CMU coach Jeremy Groves said of his players. "We told them they have to start faster, work harder, win tackles, and win headers. We knew Ohio was fighting for their lives, as are we, and for the first 20 minutes of the game, we didn't show up and we didn't compete."
How It Happened
Lauren DeBeau scored in the 16th minute for CMU to tie the game with an assist from Maddie West. It was DeBeau's third goal of the season, and the first assist as a Chippewa for West, a junior.
Ohio then scored in the 47th minute and the Chippewas could never find the equalizer.
"We fought our way back into the game," Groves said. "And then once the second half started, we went back to (the way we played) in the first half. Ohio was deservingly the winner in the end. Our kids didn't compete hard enough, which is really disappointing after that's what we've been talking about in training leading up to the game."
Numbers
The game was statistically even, with both teams attempting 10 shots. Ohio finished with an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal, and the Chippewas had six corner kicks to Ohio's three.
In Goal
Zoie Reed made six saves in goal for CMU.
