Chippewas play key MAC games at home on Thursday, Sunday
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — The Central Michigan women's soccer team will play two critical Mid-American Conference home games this weekend.
The Chippewas entertain Buffalo on Thursday, Oct. 24 (7 p.m.), and then welcome Akron on Sunday, Oct. 27 (1 p.m.). The Chippewas close the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 31 (3 p.m.) at home against Eastern Michigan.
Where They Stand
CMU is 7-3-3, 4-3-1 MAC after a loss at Ohio and a tie at Kent State last weekend.
CMU has 13 points in the MAC standings and is tied for fourth place with Ohio and Western Michigan. If the MAC tournament started today, CMU would be the No. 6 seed because both Ohio and Western own the tie-breakers over CMU.
Buffalo is 8-6-1, 5-3 and is in third place in the conference with 15 points. The Bulls have won four consecutive MAC games, capped by victories last weekend over Northern Illinois and Western Michigan.
The top eight teams in the MAC standings earn a berth in the league tournament. Those finishing in the top four spots play host to those finishing fifth-eighth in tourney quarterfinal games.
"They're pretty athletic, they pass the ball well," CMU coach Jeremy Groves said of the Bulls. "It's a big game for us where we have to jump them in the standings if we want to host a tournament game here."
Akron is 6-9-1, 3-4-1 with nine points and is in eighth place.
Looking Back
The Chippewas went 0-1-1 on a road trip to Ohio and Kent State last weekend. The Chippewas lost to the Bobcats, 2-1, and then played the Golden Flashes to a 1-1 draw.
"It's just about executing in front of the goal," Groves said. "I thought we played pretty well (against Kent State). We put them under a lot of pressure. We were a little unlucky, but we created enough opportunities to win the game anyways."
Leaders
Senior Marle Bringard leads the Chippewas with six goals, five of which have come in conference games.
Maria Kaschalk leads the Chippewas with four assists.
Scouting
Marcy Barberic leads Buffalo with five goals and shares the team lead in assists (three) with Katherine Camper and Gurjeena Jandu. Ashley Amato leads Akron in goals with four. Kayleigh Penton and Anya Donelan each have a team-high two assists.
In Goal
Senior Zoie Reed has played every minute in goal for the Chippewas this season and has recorded 64 saves. She carries an .853 save percentage and a 0.78 goals against average.
Emily Kelly, who has played the vast majority of time in goal for the Bulls, has posted 65 saves and has a 1.02 GAA with an .802 save percentage. Libby Harper and Vanessa Berlin have shared time in goal for the Zips. They have combined to make 48 saves and hold a 0.96 GAA and a .778 save percentage.
