Chippewas Fall At Home To Appalachian State

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan field hockey team fell to 0-3 in the Mid-American Conference on Friday with a 5-2 loss to Appalachian State at CMU Field Hockey Complex.
Alice O'Hagan scored both of the Chippewa goals.
How It Happened
Appalachian State (8-3, 1-2) scored three goals in the second quarter for a 4-1 halftime lead.
"It's tough because I think we just had a couple of mental breakdowns in the second quarter," CMU coach Catherine Ostoich said. "They couldn't really recover the rest of the game."
O'Hagan scored, off an assist by Taryn Damm, to tie the game 1-1 seven minutes into the first period. Her second goal, her team-leading sixth of the season, came in the fourth quarter.
"The first quarter was great," Ostoich said. "We attacked, they attacked, they scored, and I said it doesn't matter if they score first, we've got to stay in it … we really saw us actually be like, 'OK, we're still in this' and we got a goal out of it."
CMU goalkeeper Abigail Ebersole tallied six saves in the loss.
Positives
Despite the result, Ostoich was encouraged by what she saw from her team, which finished with seven penalty corners to the Mountaineers' five.
"The huge positives are that we stayed in the game," she said. "We kept attacking, we got corner after corner and we finally scored, which was awesome. And just the fact that we actually were valuing the ball … I'm obviously frustrated from the game, but it was really awesome to see that because we haven't seen it in the past couple of games."
Road Trip to Regroup
CMU will head to California where it will play two nonconference games, the first on Sunday (6 p.m.) against Cal (3-6) and the second on Tuesday (1 p.m.) against UC Davis (5-3).
"They're two more opportunities to improve," Ostoich said. "We've got to be able to string together four quarters, that's the big thing, and right now I'm happy that we strung together one and a half (on Friday), but it's got to be more than that."
