MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Now, it's on to dual meets.
The Central Michigan wrestling team will wrestle at Michigan on Sunday in its first dual meet of the season. The meet, set for U-M's Cliff Keen Arena, is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
The Chippewas have wrestled in three events this season, two invitationals and one open. They finished third at the eight-team Black Knight Invitational, hosted by Army, last weekend.
"It (wrestling a dual) changes things a little bit," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "Some guys like wrestling tournaments; they like building into the tournament, match by match by match. Other guys like wrestling dual meets; they like the attention being on them, they like the team aspect of it. So there's a different psychology to it."
The Matchup
The Wolverines, who are ranked 19th by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, are 0-1 with their loss coming to No. 17 North Carolina, 19-17. CMU is unranked.
Michigan finished one spot behind the Chippewas at the Black Knight Invitational.
The projected match-by-match lineups (CMU wrestler listed first): 125 pounds: Drew Hildebrandt vs. Jack Medley; 133: Brock Bergelin vs. Austin Assad; 141: Dresden Simon vs. Ben Freeman or Cole Mattin; 149: Corbyn Munson vs. Nick Freeman or Ben Lamantia; 157: Logan Parks vs. Will Lewan; 165: Tracy Hubbard vs. Layne Van Anrooy; 174: Jake Lowell vs. Max Maylor; 184: Ben Cushman vs. Jelani Embree; 197: Landon Pelham vs. Jackson Striggow; HWT: Matt Stencel vs. Mason Parris.
"I think it will be a real entertaining duel," Borrelli said. "We have two evenly matched teams. I really feel like it might go five-and-five and if someone wins the tossup matches, they're probably going to win the dual meet. Or it might come down to bonus points."
Premier Battle
The premier match is at 285, where CMU's Stencel is scheduled to face Parris. Stencel is 11-2 with seven pins, while Parris is 9-0. Stencel is ranked seventh nationally by flowrestling.org, while Parris is ranked sixth.
The two have faced each other five times as collegians. Parris holds a 3-2 edge and has won the last two, the last of which was a 4-0 victory in the title match at the Black Knight Invitational. Stencel's last victory over Parris, a first-period pin, came during the NCAA Championships in March.
Rankings
Hildebrandt is ranked ninth at 125 and Simon is ranked 21st. Lewan is 10th at 157 and Embree is 16th at 184.
Next
The Chippewas are off until the weekend of Dec. 6-8 when they travel to Mid-American Conference newcomers Lock Haven (Dec. 6) and Rider (Dec. 8) for a pair of duals.
