Big Longhorn second half does in CMU
AUSTIN, Texas. – Texas outscored Central Michigan, 51-34, in the second half on Saturday in topping the Chippewas, 87-76, in a nonconference men's basketball game before 8,587 at the Longhorns' Erwin Center.
The loss, CMU's second straight, dropped the Chippewas to 7-4. Texas, which has won five consecutive games, is 9-1.
How It Happened
CMU never trailed in the first half and led, 42-36, at halftime. Texas started the second half with an 8-2 run to tie it, 44-44.
The Longhorns led, 69-66, when Courtney Ramey hit a 3-pointer with 6:27 to play, igniting a 14-4 Texas run capped by two Ramey free throws that made it 83-70 with just over three minutes remaining.
The Chippewas never got closer than nine the rest of the way.
"Really pleased with our guys," CMU coach Keno Davis said. "Coming off a tough week of finals, we've been down here 18-20 hours and to play with that kind of background noise … We had every excuse in the world for not being sharp, not having our energy and legs.
"But our guys had a great attitude today, gave ourselves a chance to win. We played a really good 20 minutes, unfortunately, games are 40 minutes. We have to be able to put together a good 40 minutes."
Leaders
Kevin McKay made all seven of his field goal attempts and was seven for nine from the free throw line to lead the Chippewas with 21 points. He also led CMU with six rebounds.
David DiLeo added 15 points, Dallas Morgan had 14, and Rob Montgomery added 12.
Key Stats
Texas made 14 of its 25 3-point attempts for a blistering 56 percent. Both the number of makes and the percentage were season highs for the Longhorns.
Guard Jase Febres made a season-high seven triples, on 10 attempts, to lead the Longhorns with 23 points.
Texas outrebounded the Chippewas, 42-26.
"We really struggled in that first three minutes (of the second half)," Davis said. "We had five fouls in the first three minutes and that really disturbed us of how we were going to play. They're a really talented NCAA (Tournament) caliber team. But I liked the way we were fighting in the last 20 minutes and I think that will serve us well in the future."
