Win is Chippewas' 7th in a row
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Micaela Kelly scored 30 points and the Central Michigan women's basketball team made 52 percent of its 3-point field goal attempts on Saturday as the Chippewas rolled to a 92-67 nonconference victory over Bethune-Cookman at the Wildcats' Moore Gym.
The win was the Chippewas' seventh consecutive as they improved to 7-3. They will remain in the state of Florida to play Central Florida in Orlando on Monday, Dec. 30 (6 p.m.).
Monday's game is CMU's last nonconference contest of the season. The Chippewas open Mid-American Conference play on Saturday, Jan. 4 (2 p.m.) at Akron.
How It Happened
Kelly scored 17 of CMU's 26 first-quarter points as the Chippewas seized a 26-17 advantage heading into the second. CMU upped its lead to 57-32 at halftime.
"I thought we beat a very good, and very athletic, team," CMU coach Heather Oesterle said. "We came out and responded by attacking them. We set the tone right from the beginning of the game. We had people, like (Kelly) and Molly Davis, who were ready to play this game."
Team Stats
CMU shot a season-high 59.3 percent from the field while holding Bethune-Cookman to 36.2 percent shooting. CMU made 10 of its 15 3-point attempts.
"I thought we did a good job moving the ball, reversing the basketball and making them defend in the half court," Oesterle said. "But we also had some good looks in transition. When they started to press us at the beginning of the game, we threw over the top of it, and had wide open shots.
"We did a good job of sharing the basketball. That's the thing about this team that makes us really good is that we're unselfish and we share the ball."
Individual Stats
Kelly, who has been named the MAC West Player of the Week in each of the last two weeks, made nine of her 13 field goal attempts; included in that total was a 5-for-7 performance from 3-point range.
Davis, a freshman, scored a career-high 23 points and shared the team lead with six assists. Davis made nine of her 12 field goal attempts, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range.
Kelly, a junior guard, is averaging 30.3 points in the Chippewas last three games. She and Kyra Bussell each had a team-high eight rebounds.
Bussell and Kelly had eight rebounds apiece. Bussell had 17 points.
Preparation
UCF, Monday's opponent, is 7-4 with an RPI of 79. Last season, the Chippewas defeated UCF 75-68 at McGuirk Arena.
"These two teams (Bethune-Cookman and UCF) are very similar," Oesterle said. "I told our team that we're going to have our hands full with the amount of athleticism on the floor. They're also bigger in size (than Bethune-Cookman). Rebounding is going to be huge. They're going to press us, they play a little bit of a matchup zone. It's another very tough opponent on their home floor."
