Chippewa Wrestlers Get Back At It

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – It's back to the mat for the Central Michigan wrestling team.
And there will be no easing into it.
The Chippewas are scheduled to compete in the 57th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships in Hoffman Estates, Ill. The prestigious event begins on Sunday and concludes on Monday.
Longtime CMU coach Tom Borrelli said the tournament is the best in which his wrestlers will compete outside of the NCAA Championships in March.
Twelve of the top 25 teams in the National Wrestling Coaches Association rankings, including No. 1 Iowa, are scheduled to compete at the Midlands.
"It's an opportunity for our guys, if they do well, to move up in the rankings," said Borrelli, whose team is ranked 24th by the NWCA. "We're young and we're improving. I think our team has a lot of bright spots and a lot of momentum right now. I think even our guys who aren't in the rankings right now are improving."
The Chippewas have not competed since posting back-to-back Mid-American Conference dual-meet victories over No. 25 Lock Haven and No. 20 Rider on Dec. 6 and Dec. 8, respectively. Those two wins over league newcomers helped propel the Chippewas, who are 2-1 in duals, into the rankings.
The time off, Borrelli said, has done the Chippewas well.
"It depends on how you use the time," he said. "Whether you use the time to improve or you use the time to take a break. We had exams in there too. Our goal was to improve in that time."
CMU senior Logan Parks has moved into the flowrestling.org national rankings. He is 25th at 157 pounds, joining teammates Drew Hildebrandt, Dresden Simon and Matt Stencel in the rankings. Hildebrandt is seventh at 125, Simon is 17th at 141, and Stencel is eighth at 285.
Borrelli said a number of his wrestlers – Drew Marten (133), Corbyn Munson (149) and Tracy Hubbard (165), among them -- could be on the verge of breaking into the rankings, and their performances at the Midlands will go a long way in determining whether or not that actually comes to fruition.
The Chippewas will have just four days after the Midlands to prepare themselves for No. 5 Virginia Tech, which comes to Mount Pleasant for a nonconference dual on Friday, Jan. 3. CMU returns to MAC competition with a dual at Northern Illinois on Sunday, Jan. 5.
"We've got a tough seven days in front of us," Borrelli said.
