MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Devontae Lane and Dallas Morgan combined to make nine free throws over the final 2:41 on Friday as the Central Michigan men's basketball team defeated UT Martin, 84-75, at McGuirk Arena.
The win improves CMU's record to 7-2.
How It Happened
Travon Broadway Jr. hit a jumper for CMU with 4:16 to play with 4:06 remaining to tie the game, 75-75, and then Morgan hit a free throw with 2:41 remaining to put the Chippewas ahead for good.
"We have a team offensively that does a good job of taking what the defense gives them," CMU coach Keno Davis said. "(UT Martin) played a lot of zone defense. So, we were getting some open 3-point shots. We did a nice job of passing it inside and kicking it out.
"You could tell that was their game plan coming in was to play a zone defense. When they went to the man defense, we did a nice job of not forcing 3-pointers, but attacking the basket, and getting to the free throw line. I really liked how we had an awareness of what was working on the offensive end. With three or four minutes left, I thought you saw some great offensive plays and some intelligent basketball."
Team Stats
CMU shot 48 percent from the field, and a season high 3-point percentage of 55 percent (11 for 20). The Chippewas also finished 25 for 30 from the free throw line.
Individual Stats
Lane made all eight of his free throw attempts and finished with 17 points to lead the Chippewas. Kevin McKay added 16 points and Morgan had 14.
3-Point Shot
Heading into Friday's game, CMU was shooting 34.7 percent from the 3-point line. Morgan and David DiLeo each made three triples to lead the Chippewas from long range.
"I think you see one shot go in, it's kind of contagious throughout a team," DiLeo said. "You see one, the team's confidence goes up, and we start feeling ourselves. Even more so what was key was getting the ball out on the break. That opened up our outside shot. Anytime you shoot 11 of 20 from 3, you're doing pretty well."
Free Throws
Another key to CMU's success was scoring from the free throw line. CMU had 17 more free throws than UT Martin.
"I feel that it's extremely important," McKay said. "We missed a couple of free throws in the second half that if we would have made them, we wouldn't have been in that situation in the first place. It's definitely a good thing that we were hitting them all in the end, and we have to continue to do that down the road if we want to win these close games."

CMU will go on the road for a game at Valparaiso on Sunday, Dec. 8 (2 p.m.). Valpo is 5-4 and is coming off an 85-79 loss to Eastern Michigan.
