David DiLeo reaches 1,000 points for his career; Shawn Roundtree Jr. leads CMU with 20 points
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Despite leading for over 34 minutes, the Central Michigan men's basketball team fell, 79-72, to Bowling Green Tuesday in a interdivisional Mid-American Conference clash at the Falcons' Stroh Center.
CMU drops to 16-8 overall and 5-6 MAC. The Falcons improve to 17-7 and 9-2 in the MAC, maintaining its spot atop the MAC East.
"There are signs that we can beat anyone in the conference," said CMU head coach Keno Davis. "We have to improve with just seven games left, which is going to be really paramount for the (conference tournament) seeding. Anyone can win this league with a bad seed, but I'd prefer to have a better one."
HOW IT HAPPENED
CMU's 15-point first half lead and 10-point advantage at halftime dwindled to a one-point deficit halfway through the second half, thanks primarily to a six-minute scoreless drought. David DiLeo snapped the Chippewa skid with his fourth 3-pointer of the game, triggering a 9-0 run, which opened up a 58-50 CMU lead with 8:03 to play.
After slicing CMU's lead to four at 62-58 with five minutes to play, the Falcons embarked on a 13-4 run to take control. Layups by Kevin McKay and Roundtree each pulled the Chippewas to within three with under two minutes to go but Bowling Green made all four of their free throw attempts in the game's final 30 seconds to seal the win.
LEADERS
Roundtree lead all CMU scorers with 20 points, with 15 coming in the first half. DiLeo contributed 15 points, shooting 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Kevin McKay earned his 10th career double-double, totaling 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
SUCCESS ON THE GLASS
The Chippewas out-rebounded the Falcons 39-35 Tuesday, including a 14-7 advantage in offensive rebounds. CMU owned the battle of the boards entering halftime 20-12. BGSU entered Tuesday's game as the No. 2 team in the nation in rebounding.
DILEO JOINS THE 1,000 POINT CLUB
With a free throw at the 6:37 mark in the second half, DiLeo became the 33rd player in CMU program history to score 1,000 career points.
Josh Kozinski was the last Chippewa to reach the 1,000 point total, doing so in his final collegiate game last season.
NEXT UP FOR THE CHIPPEWAS
The Chippewas return to McGuirk Arena Saturday to host Ohio at 4:30 p.m. The Bobcats enter this weekend's tilt on a four-game losing skid, falling to Eastern Michigan 66-57 Tuesday in Athens.
