Shawn Roundtree Jr. scores 16 of his 22 points in the second half to lead CMU
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Shawn Roundtree Jr.'s 16 second-half points helped lift Central Michigan to an 87-80 Mid-American Conference victory over Ohio Saturday in McGuirk Arena.
The Chippewas improve to 17-8 overall and 6-6 with their third-straight home victory and 11th of the season. CMU has won seven consecutive versus the Bobcats.
Ohio is 11-13 overall and 3-9 in the MAC.
"I feel like we're back on track," Roundtree said. "We had two tough losses that took a lot of energy from us. For us to bounce back and get this win shows how resilient we are. Now we have to stay consistent from here on out."
Head coach Keno Davis knew CMU had a tough game on their hands out of the gate.
"There's not much difference between Ohio and the top of the (MAC)," Davis said. "I'm really proud of our team to be able to comeback after a couple of tough losses and be able to put forth that kind of effort for 40 minutes."
HOW IT HAPPENED
A David DiLeo 3-pointer in the final minute before halftime gave the Chippewas a three-point lead at the break. In the second half, CMU opened its advantage to a game-high nine points with a Larry Austin Jr. free throw at the 8:34 mark. The Bobcats responded with an 8-0 over the next minute-plus, forcing a CMU timeout.
Ohio matched the Chippewas shot for shot over the next three minutes, keeping the game within four points. The Bobcats again pulled within one point with 2:40 remaining but CMU's free throw shooting down the stretch proved to be the difference. The Chippewas went 12-of-12 from the free throw line, including eight from Roundtree, in the final 4:48 to seal the victory.
Roundtree, DiLeo and Austin combined for 21 of CMU's final 23 points.
LEADERS
All five CMU starters finished with double-digit point totals. Roundtree lead the way with 22 points, making 10-of-11 attempts from the free throw line. He has scored 20 or more points in three consecutive games and currently sits 59 shy of 1,000 for his career.
Austin added 19 points and eight rebounds while DiLeo contributed 18 points. Kevin McKay and Rob Montgomery each collected eight rebounds, scoring 14 and 12 points respectively.
