Warren, Lockwood-Powell homer for CMU
TROY, Ala. – Logan Buczkowski got a strikeout with two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday as the Central Michigan baseball team held off Troy, 5-3, in the second game of a nonconference doubleheader at the Trojans' Riddle-Pace Field.
It was the first win of the season for CMU (1-2) and the first for first-year coach Jordan Bischel. The Chippewas dropped the opening game of the twinbill, 7-6. The Chippewas and Trojans are scheduled to close the season-opening four-game series on Sunday (noon).
"Today had two more hard fought games," said Bischel, who saw his Chippewas drop a 3-2 decision in Friday's opener, his first game as the Chippewas' skipper. "It will really help us as the season progresses to have been in challenging situations in a tough road setting."
DRAMATIC ENDING
Leading 2-1, CMU scored three runs in the seventh inning on a Griffin Lockwood-Powell two-run double and an Evan Kratt RBI single.
Troy scored two runs in the seventh to cut CMU's lead to 5-3, setting the stage for a dramatic ninth when Troy used a walk and an error put runners at second and third with two outs.
Buczkowski, a sophomore right-hander who came on with two out in the seventh inning, hit pinch hitter Austin Garafolo on a full count.
The hit batsman would have loaded the bases, but home plate umpire Chase Bennett ruled that Garafolo did not attempt to move out of the way of the pitch, resulting in a called strike and the final out of the game.
CMU starter Cameron Brown went six innings for the victory. He allowed one run on four hits while striking out six.
"Cam Brown did a great job attacking hitters tonight and our defense played well behind him," Bischel said.
Buczkowski did not allow a hit over 2 1/3 innings for the save. He struck out four and walked one.
Lockwood-Powell homered to finish with three RBI, while Zach Heeke and Jason Sullivan added two hits apiece for the Chippewas, who outhit the Trojans, 9-6.
THE OPENER
Drew Frederic's two-out RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a 6-6 tie as the Trojans took the opener.
Zavier Warren had a three-run triple to highlight a five-run second inning for the Chippewas.
Tanner Jackson smacked a three-run homer and Rigsby Mosely added a two-run double as Troy responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to tie it.
Warren, a sophomore from Southfield, hit his first career home run in the fifth inning to put CMU back in front, 6-5. The Trojans tied it in the bottom of the inning on a Jackson RBI single.
"Zavier really has the potential to be a phenomenal player for us," Bischel said. "It was great to see him take some good swings in big spots."
Junior left-hander Tyler Hankins started for the Chippewas and allowed six runs on 11 hits, walked two and struck out six over five innings
Jordan Patty went the final three frames and took the loss. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out five.
