Knapp leads charge with 3 hits as CMU downs Pittsburgh
MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. –Leadoff hitter Shaidan Knapp had three hits on Saturday as the Central Michigan softball team downed Pittsburgh, 11-6, in the College of Charleston Cougar Classic at College of Charleston Softball Stadium.
It was the first win of the season for CMU, which opened the Classic on Friday with two losses and then fell to Purdue, 11-3, on Saturday morning.
CMU (1-3) is scheduled to close the season-opening tournament on Sunday (1:30 p.m.) against the host Cougars.
The Chippewas broke a 4-4 tie with a three-run fourth inning, and then added three insurance runs in the sixth.
CMU loaded the bases with two out in the fourth on singles by Morgan Gardner and Knapp and a walk to Erika Underwood, and then Shannon Stein delivered a two-run single. Underwood then scored on an error as CMU seized a 7-4 lead.
Leading 8-5, the Chippewas again loaded the bases in the sixth and Kayla Noch drew a walk to force in a run, another run scored on an error, and Knapp drove in the final run with a single.
Gardner finished with two hits and Noch picked up two RBI.
Freshman Kaitlyn Bean (1-1) started and earned the victory and Samantha pitched the final three innings for the save. Bean allowed five runs on six hits. Howell surrendered one run on three hits, while striking out two.
Pitt starter Taylor Rahach (0-1) worked 3 1/3 innings in taking the loss. The Panthers committed five errors.
A nine-run Purdue first inning proved too much for the Chippewas to overcome in their first game of the day. The game was called after five innings because of the run rule.
Underwood had two hits to lead CMU, while Stein and Noch each doubled.
Stein (0-1) started and took the loss. Cloe Mallory and Howell both pitched in relief.
