BUFFALO, N.Y. --Â Central Michigan battled No. 23/25 Buffalo from wire-to-wire but foul trouble and the Bulls' defensive pressure hampered the Chippewas in a 90-76 Mid-American Conference loss Saturday in Alumni Arena.
CMU falls to 16-7 overall, 5-5 MAC. Buffalo is 20-3, 8-2 MAC.
"We've never been called for that many fouls since I've been at Central Michigan," said CMU head coach Keno Davis. "It was nice to be able to have guys like a Romelo Burrell or Dallas Morgan to be able to step up. They looked like they deserved to be out there as much as the other guys."
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Chippewas appeared poised to knock off the nationally-ranked Bulls after a 24-4 run gave CMU a 32-14 lead with just under eight minutes to play in the first half. The Bulls, however, responded with a 24-6 run to pull the game even at 38-38. CMU then scored the half's final five points to carry a 43-38 lead into the break.
The Chippewas extended their lead to seven points early in the second half to go on top 49-42. Buffalo had yet another response, outscoring CMU 16-0 to build a 58-49 advantage with 11:42 remaining.
The Chippewas cut Buffalo's lead to three after a David DiLeo 3-pointer with two minutes on the clock, but the Bulls finished the game on a 13-2 run.
LEADERS
Roundtree finished with a game and season-high 26 points on 9-of-16 shooting and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. DiLeo added 12 points and team-high six rebounds. Morgan contributed 11 points off the bench.
CHASING HISTORY
Austin and DiLeo are both on the verge of entering portions of the CMU record book.
With his three steals against the Bulls, Austin ties Dan Roundfield's 52 in his 1973-74 campaign for 10th on the single season list. Austin is 11 away from tying Dave Grauzer's record 63 steals, set during the 1978-79 season.
Following his 12-point performance Saturday, DiLeo sits at 986 career points, 14 away from becoming the 33rd Chippewa to eclipse the 1,000 career points total.
