Baseball Drops Spring-Break Trip Finale

CMU finishes 6-2 in Florida
KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Villanova used two big innings early in the game in putting the Central Michigan baseball team into a deficit it could not overcome on Sunday as the Chippewas dropped a 13-7 decision in the finale of their Spring Break trip.
"Villanova deserves a lot of credit for being prepared to play today, they swung the bat extremely well," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "Our pitching and defense left the door open for some big innings. Villanova did a great job taking advantage."
The Chippewas finished 6-2 on their trip to Florida and are 12-4 on the season. They are scheduled to play a three-game series at Illinois State next weekend. Sunday's loss ended a five-game CMU win streak.
"As a whole it was a very productive trip for us," Bischel said. "While today was disappointing, we played our style of baseball the majority of the trip."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Villanova scored four runs in the second inning and six in the fourth in seizing a 10-3 lead.
The hits were even at 14 apiece. CMU stranded 11 baserunners.
AT THE PLATE
Zavier Warren and Jason Sullivan had three hits apiece for CMU, while Zach Gilles and Jacob Crum each had two. One of Gilles' hits was a triple and he led the Chippewas with three RBI.
ON THE MOUND
Junior right-hander Zach Kohn started for CMU and took the loss. He allowed nine runs (six earned) on six hits over 3 1/3 innings. Senior left-hander Jack Collins went the final 4 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out five and walking three.
SATURDAY'S RESULTS
Griffin Lockwood-Powell had three hits and drove in four runs, and starter Pat Leatherman struck out 10 over five innings as the Chippewas downed the Wildcats, 9-1.
Gilles finished with three hits and Warren had two with two RBI.
Cameron Miller pitched three hitless innings and Grant Frazer worked the ninth in relief for the Chippewas.
