Teams close three-game series on Sunday
NORMAL, Ill. – Illinois State scored in the late innings in both games on Saturday in sweeping a nonconference doubleheader from Central Michigan at the Redbirds' Duffy Bass Field.
The Redbirds scored five runs in the eighth inning to break a 2-2 tie in taking the opener, 7-2, and then scored the go-ahead run in the seventh for a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.
The teams close their three-game series on Sunday (2 p.m.). The Chippewas are 12-6. Illinois State is 12-5.
"We simply did not come out as prepared to play in game one as we needed to be," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "It's my responsibility to make sure we come out more prepared.
"We competed well in game two, but just allowed a couple of costly extra-base hits and had a couple of breaks go the other way."
CMU finished with 23 hits on the day, but left a total of 19 runners on base.
"Illinois State is a very good team with a talented pitching staff that make some great pitches with guys on base," Bischel said. "At times I thought we tried to do a little too much."

The Chippewas collected 11 hits and stranded 11 baserunners in the opener.
