CMU returns to MAC play this weekend at Buffalo
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan softball team managed just two hits on Tuesday in dropping its home opener, 8-0, to 25th-ranked Michigan at Margo Jonker Stadium.
The Chippewas (11-16) return to Mid-American Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at Buffalo. CMU and the Bulls meet in the opener on Friday (3 p.m.) and then in a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.).
The Chippewas are 2-1 in league play; Buffalo is 4-21, 1-1 MAC.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wolverines got a two-run homer from Madison Uden in the third inning and a three-run shot from Mackenzie Nemitz during a five-run fourth.
The game ended after five innings on the run rule. It was Michigan's eighth consecutive victory.
Michigan freshman Alex Storako (8-6) struck out eight in going the distance for the victory.
CMU hits came on a bunt by Shaidan Knapp and on infield tapper by Sara Hansen.
"This is the first time we've seen this pitcher," CMU coach Margo Jonker said. "She pitched really well for them. Michigan's on a roll right now. We need to get on a roll ourselves."
Hansen's hit helped the Chippewas load the bases in the fourth inning – they also got a walk and a Michigan error – but Storako induced an inning-ending popup to work out of the jam.
IN THE CIRCLE
Samantha Howell (3-4) started for CMU and took the loss. She allowed four runs on six hits, walked three and struck out one over 3 1/3 innings.
Cloe Mallory and Kaitlyn Bean pitched in relief.
"We weren't hitting our spots and they did a good job of having the discipline of swinging at pitches in the zone," Jonker said. "When we weren't pitching well, they took advantage of it."
OPENING DAY
The temperatures were chilly, but there was little wind and the sun was out, making for a relatively comfortable opener, weather-wise. The game was played before 750 fans.
"It's awesome to have the crowd that we had and I really appreciate that people who came out to the game today," Jonker said. "That's impressive that people care enough about our program, and Michigan's program, to come out.
"I've known (Michigan coach Carol Hutchins) and their coaching staff for, well, 34 years and I have a great deal of respect for them and know that they'll always bring it to the field. Disappointed that we didn't do a better job performing.
"I didn't think we pitched very well and obviously we didn't make the adjustments at the plate like we should have."
