Chippewas put an emphasis on distance, field events at North Carolina State
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan track & field team will travel to Raleigh, N.C. to compete in the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State, on Friday and Saturday.
Â
It is the second outdoor meet of the season for the Chippewas, who got off to a good start, particularly in field events, last weekend at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invitational.
Â
CMU swept the Javelin at Vanderbilt, with senior Avery Joseph winning the men's portion and sophomore Megan McElroy capturing the women's.
Â
The javelin is strictly an outdoor event, and the Chippewa throwers had been waiting since the end of last season to show off their skill.
Â
"I think their performances surprised coach Stephen Saenz because you wonder if they're going to be rusty, and they did really well," CMU coach Jenny Swieton said. "It allowed us to leave Nashville on a really high note. A lot of good things happened last weekend, and it's always fun to close out strong because that was the last event that was going on (at the meet)."
Â
Swieton said about 50 Chippewas are expected to compete in Raleigh. CMU strongly emphasize distance running and field events.
Â
The Chippewas are looking to carry over momentum from a strong indoor season, when the women won the Mid-American Conference title and Nadia Williams earned All-America honors. Strong performances in events such as the javelin – contested only in outdoor meets – can only help, Swieton said.
Â
"From a coach's perspective, that's more points that we add outdoor that we didn't have indoor," she said. "Anytime we can do that, it's awesome, it's a really big opportunity for us."
Â
The Chippewas will go to Kalamazoo on Saturday, April 6, for the Compass Cup, hosted by Western Michigan.
