Underwood looks to continue hot streak at the plate for CMU
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan softball team is set to entertain rival Western Michigan on Tuesday (1 p.m.) in a Mid-American Conference doubleheader at Margo Jonker Stadium.
The Chippewas are 12-17-1, 3-2-1 MAC and coming off a three-game weekend series at Buffalo in which they went 1-1-1.
The Broncos are 9-13, 2-0 MAC after sweeping a league doubleheader from Akron over the weekend. The third game of the series was cancelled because of weather.
THE CHIPPEWAS
Erika Underwood led the Chippewas at the plate at Buffalo as she had four hits, including a home run, in eight at-bats in the series. She also drove in four runs.
Underwood, a senior first baseman, is hitting .385 (10 for 26) with four homers and 11 RBI in CMU's last 10 games.
Shaidan Knapp leads the Chippewas with a .337 batting average, while Shannon Stein has a team-best six home runs, and is tied for fifth in the MAC in that category. Stein and Underwood share the team lead in RBI with 18 apiece.
Samantha Howell, Kaitlyn Bean, Cloe Mallory and Haley John have shouldered most of the pitching load for the Chippewas.
Bean sports a team-best 3.59 earned run average, while Howell has logged three complete games along with two saves.
SCOUTING
Sophomore Sydney Stefanick leads the Broncos with a .394 batting average, seven home runs and 24 RBI. She ranks among the top five in the MAC in all three categories. As a pitcher, Stefanick is 4-4 with a team-best 3.15 earned run average.
Western ranks fourth in the MAC with a 3.63 team ERA and is fifth with a .274 team batting average.
The Broncos collected 22 hits in an 18-10, nine-inning victory last weekend over Akron.
WHERE THEY STAND
At 2-0, Western is in second place in the MAC behind Ball State, which is 3-0 in league play. The Chippewas are fifth in the conference standings.
NEXT
The Chippewas entertain Ohio in a three-game MAC series beginning on Friday (3 p.m.). The teams are slated to close the series with a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.). Ohio is 24-11 and 5-1 (third) MAC. The Bobcats are scheduled to play a league doubleheader at Kent State on Tuesday.
