CMU returns to MAC play on Wednesday at Western Michigan
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan softball team will look to remain hot on Tuesday (4 p.m.) when it entertains Michigan State in a nonconference game at Margo Jonker Stadium.
The Chippewas are scheduled to resume Mid-American Conference play less than 24 hours later when they head to Kalamazoo to play Western Michigan on Wednesday.
CMU split a doubleheader last week with the Broncos, taking the nightcap 11-3. That win helped propel the Chippewas into the weekend, during which they swept a three-game home MAC series from Ohio.
The Chippewas are riding their longest win streak (four games) of the season.
BIG WEEKEND
The three-game sweep of Ohio gave the Chippewas a 4-1 record on the week; all five games were against MAC foes and the Chippewas emerged from the weekend 7-3-1 in MAC play and are one game behind first-place Kent State, which is 6-2 in the league, in the loss column.
The Chippewas got outstanding pitching from Kaitlyn Bean and Samantha Howell in winning their four games last week. Particularly impressive for CMU was the fact that Ohio entered the weekend series as the MAC' top-hitting team at .310, and Bean and Howell combined to hold the Bobcats to a .226 average over the three games.
Bean went 3-0 on the week, tossing three complete games. She struck out 11. Howell went the distance for the victory in the CMU's 6-3 win over Ohio in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday. She struck out four, surrendered five hits and did not walk a batter.
Senior center field Sara Hansen enjoyed a big week, hitting .571 (8 for 14) in the Chippewas' five games with five RBI, six runs, three doubles and two triples.
Freshman Shannon Stein had a two-run double and a three-run homer in the Chippewas' 7-4 game-two win over Ohio on Saturday. It was Stein's seventh home run of the season, breaking a tie with Erika Underwood for the team lead.
Underwood leads the Chippewas with a .333 batting average; Shaidan Knapp is second (.326).
SCOUTING
The Spartans (14-22) have won three of their last four games and took two of three from visiting Maryland over the weekend. MSU is 3-6 (tied for ninth) in the Big Ten.
The Spartans have hit seven home runs in their last four games. They have 28 on the season and their team batting average stands at a season-best .282, which ranks seventh in the conference.
Freshman catcher Charla Echols leads the Spartans in hitting at .360 and is one of five MSU starters hitting .300 or better. Sophomore shortstop Caitie Ladd leads the Spartans in home runs (11) and RBI (29). Sophomore outfielder Katie Quinlan has stolen 12 bases in 14 attempts.
Jacquie Joseph, a standout player at CMU for Chippewa legend Margo Jonker, is in her 26th season as the Spartans' head coach.
