Chippewas post shutout; head to Iowa next weekend
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Freshman Alice O'Hagan scored two goals and Abigail Ebersole and Keelin Broeker combined to post the shutout on Monday as the Central Michigan field hockey team defeated Saint Louis, 3-0, at the CMU Field Hockey Complex.
The Chippewas, who opened with a 4-1 victory over Colgate on Friday, are off to their first 2-0 start since 2013, and have posted consecutive wins for the first time since October, 2014.
"Some of these student-athletes weren't even in high school yet (in 2013), so I was like, 'We've got to change that,'" second-year CMU coach Catherine Ostoich said. "We had an awesome opportunity and then to be here and be like, OK, we're 2-0, it's pretty awesome."
The Chippewas have matched their 2018 win total (they finished 2-16 last season).
"The team has worked so hard, and just to see where we were last year at the beginning of the season to where we are this year, the progress we're making is incredible," Ostoich said.
HOW IT HAPPENED
O'Hagan found the back of the net under three minutes in to Monday's game, giving the Chippewas a 1-0 lead.
Less than six minutes later, Sarah Mesko showed off her nifty playmaking ability in setting up teammate Samantha Glapinski for another goal to give the Chippewas a 2-0 lead.
O'Hagan scored her second goal of the game, off a Taryn Damm assist, less than seven minutes into the second half.
O'Hagan leads the Chippewas with three goals on the season.
"She's having an awesome start," Ostoich said of O'Hagan. "I am so impressed with her and just so proud of her. She has an awesome shot and she's very threatening in the circle."
The Chippewas adeptly protected their lead with a stellar defensive effort. Ebersole and Broeker combined to make two saves.
The Chippewas outshot the Billikens, 16-3, and finished with seven penalty corners to the Billikens' three.
STRONG 'D'
While offensive aggression has remained a focal point for the Chippewas, intensity on defense has also been crucial to their early success.
CMU has allowed just one goal in its first two games combined.
"It was awesome to walk away from this game with zero goals against," Ostoich said. "Something we stressed on the defensive side is we've got to foul outside the circle, and I think we did a better job of that today than we did on Friday (against Colgate). We're looking to keep improving that … and really maintaining possession."

CMU goes to Iowa City for two nonconference games next weekend. The Chippewas are scheduled to take on Iowa on Friday, Sept. 6 (4 p.m.), and Columbia on Saturday, Sept. 7 (3 p.m.).
