Field Hockey Heads To Ball State Seeking First MAC Win

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan field hockey team heads to Ball State on Saturday (1 p.m.) for a Mid-American Conference game with the Cardinals.
Eyeing First MAC Win
The Chippewas and Cardinals are both 2-7, 0-1 MAC. CMU fell last weekend to Longwood, 1-0, in its league opener. The Cardinals' league loss came to defending league regular-season and tournament champion Miami (Ohio), 1-0.
CMU coach Catherine Ostoich said the game could be decided by effort and energy.
"I think it's going to come down to the same thing, who wants it more," she said. "I think we're very evenly matched with Ball State, so it really comes down to, when you walk on the field, do you want it more than the other team. … It's really going to come down to that heart and that hustle."
Capitalizing on Offense
CMU ended a four-game scoreless streak in its 3-2 nonconference loss on Sunday at Saint Francis (Pa.). The Chippewas scored the first goal of the game and built a 2-1 fourth-quarter lead.
Although two goals were not enough to secure a win, Ostoich said it is something upon which her team can build.
"I think that was super important for us, the fact that we got on the board first," she said. "I think that's definitely good momentum moving forward but we've got to keep with it, we've got to keep taking advantage of every opportunity we have."
Ebersole Earns MAC Honor
CMU goalkeeper Abigail Ebersole earned the MAC Defensive Player of the Week Award after making a combined 30 saves in the Chippewas' two games last week.
"She's put in so much hard work, so the fact that she's getting this recognition is just incredible," Ostoich said. "The fact that she's making all these saves and keeping us in games is huge. It's definitely a confidence booster, we just have to use that as momentum to keep pushing forward."
Ebersole leads the MAC and ranks fourth in the nation in saves per game with 8.75.
