MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Fresh off a solid showing in its season-opening meet, the Central Michigan gymnastics team jumps into Mid-American Conference competition on Sunday (1 p.m.) with a dual meet at Eastern Michigan.
The Chippewas are the defending MAC regular-season champions. Last weekend, they topped Michigan State and Illinois State in a nonconference tri-meet at MSU's Jenison Field House.
CMU posted a 195.675 team score, a good number particularly in light of the fact that it came in both the season opener and on the road.
"I felt that our team performed very well in that atmosphere and there is definitely room to grow," first-year CMU coach Christine MacDonald said. "It's a starting point and now we continue to build off of that."
The Chippewas' team score is the 14th best in the nation and the 49.100 they posted on the uneven parallel bars ranks as the 11th best. The scores that CMU posted on both the balance beam and the vault last week rank as the 21st best nationally, while their floor exercise score is 31st.
Senior Denelle Pedrick along with freshman Hannah Demers led CMU at Michigan State. Pedrick, the reigning MAC Gymnast of the Year, won the floor exercise and placed second on the vault, the bars and the all-around in earning the MAC Gymnast of the Week Award; Demers won the vault and the bars in her first collegiate meet.
"This week we went back into the gym, we focused on the details, we went back and reworked routines," MacDonald said "We have some new faces in lineup this weekend, and in the next month you're going to see the lineup change and evolve, maybe not a great deal, but one or two people (with each meet) just to keep testing out what we think is our best and our strongest lineup.
"This week the girls did awesome. They came in, worked hard, stayed committed to what we know works for us and staying committed to our game plan this weekend is going be another step forward."
Eastern Michigan posted a 194.875 score in winning its season-opening meet, a MAC matchup, last weekend at Bowling Green. The Eagles posted a 49.100 score on beam; that score stands as the eighth best in the nation after the first week of competition. The Eagles' 194.875 was the 28th best in the country.
