MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan gymnastics team will give fans their first look at the 2020 Chippewas on Sunday when CMU takes to McGuirk Arena for the Maroon & Gold Intrasquad.
The meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. Admission is free.
"We are looking forward to performing in McGuirk Arena before the season starts," CMU coach Christine MacDonald said. "We have had a great fall and training has been going really well. The team is excited to get the season started and this weekend really gives us a great opportunity to fine-tune our routines."
The Chippewas return several front liners including senior Denelle Pedrick, the 2019 Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Year; and sophomore Morgan Tong, the reigning MAC Freshman of the Year.
The Chippewas posted a 194.500 score in a four-team exhibition at Michigan four weeks ago. It was a respectable number considering that it was CMU's first competition since the spring.
"Our scores will certainly improve," said MacDonald, who was named in May as the Chippewas coach after the former Chippewa gymnast had served as an assistant in the program for 25 years. "We take a systematic approach; it's about steady, hard work and getting better every day that we are in the gym."
The Chippewas open the season with a nonconference dual at Michigan State on Saturday, Jan. 11. They go to Eastern Michigan on Jan. 19 for their MAC opener.
CMU will partake in meets at Ohio State, Northern Illinois and Southern Utah before competing at home against MAC rival Kent State on Feb. 16.
