MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan gymnastics team is set to open the 2021 season with a meet at Ball State on Sunday, Jan. 24.
That kicks off a nine-date regular-season slate comprising almost exclusively Mid-American Conference competition.
"We are looking forward to getting back to performing for our fans and family," CMU coach Christine MacDonald said. "We will have several multiple-team meets. This is very important as we build to compete, not only for MAC Championships, but for postseason as well.
"Due to COVID-19 restrictions, many conferences have chosen to go to conference-only scheduling. This change created an opportunity for us to continue to compete within the MAC and remain closer to home when possible."
The Chippewas are set to host three meets, duals against Northern Illinois (Feb. 11) and Bowling Green State (Feb. 28) and a March 13 quad with Eastern Michigan, Western Michigan and Ball State.
CMU is slated to go to MAC opponents Western Michigan (Jan. 31), Bowling Green State (Feb. 5) and Kent State (Feb. 21) and are scheduled to compete in a tri-meet with Lindenwood at Illinois State on March 7. The meet at Illinois State will be CMU's lone nonconference regular-season competition.
The MAC Championships are slated for Western Michigan on March 20.
The league will not award a regular-season championship in 2021.
"Without a regular-season champion our focus doesn't change, but it does allow for some flexibility during the season to adjust the schedule and continue to challenge our team with high-caliber opponents," MacDonald said.
