CMU gets set to open MAC play on Friday
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan men's basketball team is set to entertain St. Francis (Ill.) on Monday (4:30 p.m.) in a nonconference game at McGuirk Arena.
It's a quick turnaround for the Chippewas (2-3), who on Saturday posted their second-consecutive victory, 84-79, over Valparaiso in their home opener.
Looking Back
Senior guard Devontae Lane scored a career-high 27 points in leading the Chippewas past Valparaiso, which is 2-4 and its ledger includes a six-point loss to Vanderbilt and a seven-point loss to Purdue.
Where They Stand
The Chippewas opened the season with three straight losses, all on the road. Two of those games were played on back-to-back nights in Miami.
Ninth-year CMU coach Keno Davis welcomed a boatload of newcomers in 2020-21 and returned just one full-time starter (Lane).
Among those seven student-athletes who are in their first year in the program, 6-foot-10 freshman Aundre Polk, guard Caleb Huffman, and 6-6 swingman Meikkel Murray have made a significant impact through the first five games.
Huffman has yet to start but ranks fourth on the team in minutes per game (25.2) and is one of three Chippewas averaging in double figures (12.2) in scoring.
Polk moved into the starting lineup in the third game of the season and is averaging 9.2 points and 4.4 rebounds in 19 minutes per game. Murray, who has started all five games, is averaging 9.0 and a team-best 5.6 rebounds per game.
Chippewa Debut
Malik Muhammad, one of those newcomers, made his CMU debut in Saturday's win over Valpo. Muhammad, a 6-9 junior who transferred from East Los Angeles College, had two points in 10 minutes.
Numbers
Broadway leads the Chippewas in scoring (16.6) while Lane is averaging 12.2.
Lane made a career-high five 3-pointers in the victory over Valpo and is knocking down 50 percent (8-for-16) of his triples tries on the season.
Scouting
St. Francis (4-1) is an NAIA school that plays in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Southern Division.
Junior guard Joey Buggemi is the leading scorer at 15.4 points per game, while fellow guard Eric Ting, a senior, averages 10.6. Deandre Johnson, a 6-7 senior, averages 9.0 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.
The Bulldogs are making 40.2 percent (39-of-97) of their 3-point tries.
