Schdule includes severall quads and tri-meets
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan wrestling team will hit the mat for the first time in the 2020-21 season at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27 for its annual Maroon & Gold Intrasquad at McGuirk Arena.
With COVID-19 protocols in place, no spectators will be allowed in the arena.
The intrasquad kicks off an eight-date regular season that will take on an altered look due to COVID-19.
The season culminates with the Mid-American Conference Championships Feb. 27-28 at Rider in Lawrenceville, N.J. and the NCAA Championships March 18-20 in St. Louis.
Four of the regular-season dates comprise dual meets against multiple opponents. The first is a tri-meet at MAC foe Missouri with Wyoming on Jan. 8. The Chippewas are scheduled to partake in a quad meet on Jan. 23 at Clarion with Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Kent State; and in a nonconference tri-meet, their final regular-season event, at Northern Iowa with Iowa State on Feb. 13.
The Chippewas are slated to entertain MAC foes George Mason and Ohio in a tri-meet on Jan. 31. CMU will square off in three traditional dual meets: Jan. 3 vs. Olivet and Jan. 17 against Northern Illinois, both at home; and at Buffalo on Feb. 7.
Neither Michigan nor Michigan State – longtime staples of the Chippewas' schedule – is on the docket for this season. Big Ten teams are prohibited from wrestling out-of-conference opponents because of league rules.
"We had to be creative and try to get some of that competition and some of the teams that would wrestle us in nonconference matches are a little ways away," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said, who added that the schedule includes a number of tri-meets and quads is because of the amount and frequency of COVID-19 testing that is required. "You're trying to get as many guys as you can to the nationals or at least give them the opportunity to wrestle the type of competition that will move them into the rankings so that they can get to the nationals if they don't win the MAC championship."
Wrestling in tri-meets and quads requires a different strategy than does tournaments and opens. Like everybody else, the Chippewas will have to adapt.
"It's a little bit different because you have to have more backups because you just don't know what's going to happen," he said. "If you're wrestling quads and a guy gets hurt in the first dual, then you're forfeiting a match and if you don't have quality depth there that (potentially) changes the outcome of a lot of dual meets. So you have to be a little more strategic."
