CMU softball goes to Georgia for 5 games next weekend
CLERMONT, Fla. – The Central Michigan softball team fell to Purdue, 9-3, on Sunday in its fifth and final game of its season-opening weekend in Florida.
The Chippewas return to action next weekend, when they are scheduled to compete in the Georgia Classic in Athens, Ga. The Chippewas are scheduled to play five games in the tournament, opening on Friday, Feb 21, against Austin Peay.
How It Happened
Purdue, which collected 11 hits including six doubles off three CMU pitchers, used a pair of three-run innings in building a 7-3 lead through five innings.
In the Circle
CMU sophomore Haley John (0-1) started and took the loss. She allowed four runs on seven hits over four innings. Samantha Howell and Kaitlyn Bean each pitched in relief.
Winning pitcher Ashley Peters (1-0) allowed all three Chippewa runs over 3 2/3 innings. She struck out four. Brenna Smith pitched in relief, striking out two.
At the Plate
Freshman catcher Kelsey Alexander had two hits including a two-run single for the Chippewas, who finished with seven hits. Gisele Acuna, another freshman, drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. It marked the first career RBI for both Alexander and Acuna.
Alexander started behind the plate in four of the Chippewas' five games on the weekend.
"Kelsey Alexander did a great job behind the plate," CMU coach McCall Salmon said. "She was able to get a couple hits and a couple RBIs for us. That was key."
Samantha Mills, the starting catcher last season who spent the weekend moving around from behind the plate to designated hitter and in the outfield, had two hits and freshman Skylar Coberley doubled.
Taking Steps
"Where we were at Friday, and where we're at (Sunday), we've already seen growth in the five games we've played," Salmon said. "As we continue to grow, and make adjustments, I think this team will really start to put things together."
