ATHENS, Ga. – Freshman Gisele Acuna hit a two-run homer on Friday as the Central Michigan softball team topped Austin Peay, 4-3, in the 17th Annual Georgia Classic at the Bulldogs' Turner Stadium.
It was the first win of the season for CMU and it marked McCall Salmon's first win as the Chippewas' coach. Salmon replaced the legendary Margo Jonker, who retired following the 2019 season after 40 seasons at the helm of the program.
The Chippewas dropped an 8-0 decision to No. 19 Georgia in their second game on Friday.
CMU (1-6) is scheduled to play both Austin Peay (3-5) and the Bulldogs (11-3) on Saturday. CMU and Georgia will square off at 3:30 p.m., and the Chippewas will meet Austin Peay at 6 p.m.
The Chippewas will wrap up the weekend on Sunday (10:30 a.m.) when they face No. 21 James Madison.
First Win
Acuna's home run, the first of her career, tied the game 2-2 in the fifth inning.
After Austin Peay went ahead, 3-2, with a run in the top of the seventh, CMU loaded the bases with two singles and a hit batsman, and then Morgan Gardner was hit by a pitch for force in a run and tie the game, 3-3.
Shannon Stein then drew a walk to force in the winning run.
"We talked about winning every inning, and we were able to do that," Salmon said. "It's fun to see the improvement with this team every day."
Acuna had two of the Chippewas' eight hits.
"She had a great plan of attack every time she stepped into the box," Salmon said. "It was nice to see her work pay off."
Sophomore Kaitlyn Bean (1-2) went the final two innings in the circle in relief of starter Cloe Mallory in earning the win. Bean allowed one run on one hit, struck out one and walked one.
Mallory surrendered two runs on six hits and struck out three over five innings.
Big Inning
A six-run Georgia first inning proved too much for the Chippewas in their second game of the day against Georgia. The game ended after five innings on the run rule.
Shannon Stein had the loan hit, a first-inning single, for CMU.
Sophomore Haley John started for the Chippewas and took the loss.
"I'm looking forward to seeing (CMU) compete and bring high energy tomorrow," Salmon said. "Overall, just continuing to improve in every aspect."
