COLUMBIA, Mo. – Matt Stencel and Drew Hildebrandt each went 2-0 to highlight the No. 21 Central Michigan wrestling team's trip to Missouri, where they took on the 10th-ranked Tigers and unranked Wyoming in a double dual on Friday.
Missouri handed the Chippewas a 30-6 Mid-American Conference loss in the opening dual of the night, and then CMU fell to Wyoming, 24-12, in a nonleaguer.
The Chippewas are 1-2, 0-1 MAC. Missouri, 4-0, 1-0, is the eight-time defending MAC champion.
"I think there were some positives but also we've got a lot of things we can improve on – a lot," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "I like wrestling the people that are your best competition in dual meets early in the season because you know what you have to do to get better and get ready for the conference tournament. I feel like this was a good time for us to wrestle them. We learned a lot."
Stencel, who is ranked fourth nationally at 285 pounds, defeated a pair of ranked opponents as he furthered his reputation as one of the nation's best. He topped Missouri's Zach Elam, 4-1; and then downed Wyoming's Brian Andrews, 7-1. Elam is ranked eighth, Andrews is ninth.
Hildebrandt (125) opened with a 7-5 overtime victory over Missouri's Connor Brown, and then topped Wyoming's Brendon Garcia, 4-0. Hildebrandt came from behind to beat Brown, who is ranked 24th.
Trailing 5-3, Hildebrandt took down Brown with about 10 seconds remaining in regulation to tie it 5-5 and then scored another takedown just seven seconds into overtime for the dramatic sudden victory.
"Both of those guys seemed like they were ready and continued on from last year, just moving forward from last year," Borrelli said of Hildebrandt and Stencel, both of whom are returning All-Americans.
Hildebrandt's win over Brown might have given the Chippewas a shot of momentum, but it was short lived. Missouri, featuring a lineup chock full of ranked wrestlers with All-American pedigrees, won the next eight matches in a row, mixing in a pin, a technical fall, and a major decision along the way.
Among the most competitive of those eight matches was at 149, where CMU sophomore Corbyn Munson battled two-time All-American Brock Mauller before succumbing, 5-3. Munson bounced back with a 9-7 victory over senior Jaron Jensen of Wyoming.
Munson lost twice to Mauller last season, both times by 10-4 scores.
"I think he's closing the gap (on Mauller)," Borrelli said. "This is the third time he's wrestled him and every time he's wrestled him, he's gotten closer. That should give him some confidence."
Hildebrandt's win against Wyoming staked the Chippewas to a 3-0 lead. After decision victories from Dresden Simon (141) and Munson, CMU led 9-6. But they dropped the next five matches in a row, including at 165 where the Chippewas' Alex Cramer was disqualified in overtime with his match tied, 6-6.
That broke a 9-9 tie and put the Cowboys up 15-9, leaving the Chippewas the tall task of taking down ranked wrestlers in each of the remaining four weight classes.
"They outwrestled us, that's all there is to it," Borrelli said.
In extra matches won by CMU wrestlers, Mason Breece (149) pinned Precious Essian of Missouri in 2:17; Brock Bergelin (133) pinned Cameron Valdiviez of Missouri in 5:48 and then took a 5-4 win from Jake Svihel of Wyoming; and Aaron Bolo (197) pinned Wyoming's Tucker Tomlinson in 4:18.
The Chippewas return home to face Northern Illinois in a MAC dual on Sunday, Jan. 17 (2 p.m.).
