Field Hockey Gets Game Winner In Final Minute

LORETTO, Pa. – Rachel Ruttenberg scored with 28 seconds remaining on Sunday to lift Central Michigan to a dramatic 1-0 nonconference field hockey victory over Saint Francis.
It was Ruttenberg's team-leading third goal of the season, and it gave the Chippewas (3-7) their second win in their last three starts. Saint Francis is 3-8.
St. Francis outshot the Chippewas, 12-9, including an 8-5 edge in shots on goal. CMU had nine penalty corners, five of which came in the first quarter.
"We attacked really hard in the first quarter," CMU coach Catherin Ostoich said. "We just did not finish anything. We had those five corner opportunities and got nothing on any of them. But we did not give up the whole game and that led to the final shot and the goal."
CMU goalkeeper Katie Maxim recorded eight saves, posting her second shutout of the season after surrendering a season-high seven goals in a loss at Longwood on Friday.
"I don't think Katie had her best game against Longwood," Ostoich said. "It was great to see her play well today and boost that confidence heading back into conference play."
The Chippewas head to Oxford, Ohio, to play Miami (Ohio) on Friday, Oct. 8 (1 p.m.) in a MAC game.
Ostoich lauded the play of junior captain Lauren Buffington, who had a quiet day statistically but showed strong leadership.
"Lauren really did not get a lot of calls to go her way today, but she hustled every play and never really gave up," Ostoich said.
