MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The Central Michigan volleyball team dropped a four-setter to Toledo at McGuirk Arena on Saturday, a devastating defeat that followed Friday's four-set win over the Rockets.
CMU is 12-16, 6-11 Mid-American Conference. Toledo is 19-10, 10-7.
Although the loss removes the Chippewas from contention for the MAC Tournament, there is one game left on the slate. CMU will host Eastern Michigan on Nov. 17 (6 p.m.) at McGuirk Arena; it serves as one last ride for the Chippewas' nine graduating student-athletes, who were honored after Saturday's match.
The Chippewas jumped out on top in set one with a 25-23 victory, while the Rockets flipped the script early in the second set to grab a 14-7 lead into a CMU timeout. Though the Chippewas pulled themselves back to even at 20-20, Toledo ended up with the set, 25-23.
"We found ourselves in a similar situation to (Friday)," CMU coach Mike Gawlik said. "I really liked our grit to kind of get back into the match, I felt like we were within striking distance, we couldn't steal that one back."
The Chippewas and the Rockets kept things close in the third set, but Toledo strung together consecutive runs to pull away, forcing CMU timeouts at 13-9 and 22-16 before going on a final scoring run to seal the set, 25-19.
The fourth and final set fell went to the Rockets, 25-13.
Lisbeth Rosario-Martinez led the Chippewas with 13 kills and Savannah Thompson added 12. Setters Grace Butler and Kamryn Olson added 23 and 20 assists, respectively.
Middle blockers Elly Medendorp and Megan Sivertsen made significant defensive contributions for CMU; Medendorp tallied four block assists and Sivertsen had two. Libero Aly Gurtiza finished with 26 digs.
The Chippewa volleyball program honored their nine seniors in a post-match ceremony. They are Sivertsen, Butler, Thompson, Rosario-Martinez, along with Lacey Juengel, Kendall Braate, Hannah Warners, Gabrielle Kapuscinski and Sierra Gray.
The nine will play their final match of their respective collegiate careers at McGuirk Arena on Wednesday.
"It's tough," Gawlik said. "You know that the MAC Tournament is out of play at this point and it's disappointing, but you get an opportunity to play one more match.
"If you ask any retired or former athlete if they could go back and play one more match, even if it mattered or didn't, it would matter a lot. Every match we have an opportunity to play is really important for us, and we're lucky to have that opportunity."
