MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – No. 13 ranked Michigan outscored Central Michigan, 18-6, in the second quarter on Saturday and then used a 15-0 fourth-quarter surge to pull away in handing the Chippewas a 69-45 nonconference loss at McGuirk Arena.
The Chippewas, who earned their first season win at Valparaiso on Nov. 14, are 1-2, while the Wolverines stay undefeated at 4-0. CMU is scheduled to travel to Boston for a Nov. 26 (6:00 p.m.) game at Northeastern.
"We struggled to defend in the paint today," CMU coach Heather Oesterle said. "But at the end of the day, we've got to keep getting better every game; Northeastern's the next big game because it's the next (game)."
Down as many as 22 points in the third quarter, the Chippewas made a fourth-quarter surge, drawing to within 13, 51-38, on a Hanna Knoll 3-pointer with 8:26 to play. But the Wolverines scored the next 15 points to end CMU's comeback hopes.
The Wolverines made 41.5 percent of their field goal attempts while holding CMU to 32.2 percent from the field. The Chippewas hit just three of their 23 3-point tries, the first make coming from Anika Weekes at the third-quarter buzzer.
Molly Davis scored a season-high 18 points to lead the Chippewas. Weekes finished with 11 points.
"I feel like Molly was in attack mode today," Oesterle said. "I thought she had a really good all-around game for us today, floor manager, getting us in at offense, we just need some support around her that's able to put the ball in the basket.
"When we do get the confidence in our shooting, I think we could be pretty dangerous."
