Volleyball Falls In Opener At Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. – The Central Michigan volleyball team dropped a four-set Mid-American Conference match at Ball State on Thursday at the Cardinals' Worthen Arena.
The Cardinals took the match, 25-21, 25-20, 21-25, 25-22. The loss left CMU to 11-15, 5-9 MAC. The Cardinals extended their win streak to 13 in improving to 23-3, 13-1. They lead the MAC East.
CMU and Ball State are scheduled to close their two-match series on Friday (6:30 p.m.).
Savannah Thompson had 14 kills, 16 digs, and a season-high four blocks to lead the Chippewas.
Anna Erickson added 13 kills and Linnea Willer had 12 for CMU. Chippewa setters Grace Butler and Kendall Braate finished with 26 and 19 assists, respectively, and libero Ally Gurtiza recorded 19 digs.
The Cardinals finished with a .281 hitting percentage to CMU's .251.
The Chippewas closed to within two points, 20-18, after falling into a 10-3 deficit in the first set. At 20-18, the Cardinals reeled off four straight points to extend their lead to 24-18.
Ball State inched ahead with a three-point spurt to claim an 11-8 lead in the second. CMU cut its deficit to two points on several occasions but could never get the equalizer or go ahead.
The Chippewas flipped the script in set 3, using an 8-2 run to seize an 18-12 advantage. Thompson and Krystina Kasson had two kills each during the spurt, and Erickson had a kill and an ace. Ball State crept back within in three, 18-15, but the Chippewas got three straight points – two on kills by Linnea Willer – to re-up their advantage to six, 21-15. They closed it out from there.
Down 16-8 in the fourth and final set, the Chippewas clawed back to within 17-16. But Ball State answered with three consecutive points to go up 20-16. CMU drew to within two points five times, the last at 24-22.
