NICEVILLE, Fla. – The Central Michigan wrestling team opened the Journeyman Collegiate Duals with a pair of losses on Monday.
The Chippewas fell to 17th-ranked Lehigh, 25-6, and then dropped a 44-0 decision to No. 1 Iowa.
CMU (1-2) closes the event on Tuesday with a dual at 2 p.m. against Binghamton.
The Chippewas' victories against Lehigh came from Ja'Kerion Merritt at 133 pounds and from Corbyn Munson at 149.
Merritt defeated Sheldon Seymour, 3-2, and Munson came from behind to down Manzona Bryant, 12-9. It was the first appearance in a dual meet as a Chippewa for Merritt, a sophomore from Hopkinsville, Ky.
Bryant, Munson's opponent, was ranked 30th in the weight class by InterMat. Munson overcame an early 6-0 deficit to claim the victory.
CMU lost eight matches to the Mountain Hawks. Seven of them by two points or less and two of those came in overtime.
"You've got to figure out how to win those matches," CMU coach Tom Borrelli said. "That's part of it. You have to be good enough to beat them by one point or two points instead of losing by a point or two.
"We're just not ready for that yet; we've got to get ready. Those are the types of matches that are the difference between you doing well at the end of the year and not doing well. And that's why we came here. We want those matches."
The top-ranked Hawkeyes simply overpowered the Chippewas, scoring bonus points in five of the 10 matches.
Eight of Iowa's 10 wrestlers is ranked individually in the top eight in his weight class and two, Spencer Lee (125) and Alex Marinelli (165) are ranked No. 1.
"We learned a lot from it," Borrelli said. "It wasn't pretty … but it's good for our guys, for our team, to be in that environment and understand what it takes to be successful on that level."
