CMU Women Drop MAC Opener

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Buffalo outscored Central Michigan, 22-11, in the fourth quarter on Wednesday as the Bulls delivered the Chippewas a 92-75 loss in the Mid-American Conference women's basketball opener at Alumni Arena.
The fourth consecutive loss dropped the Chippewas to 2-8. Buffalo snapped a two-game losing streak in improving to 7-4.
CMU will return to McGuirk Arena to play Northern Illinois (3-5) on Saturday, Jan. 1 (1 p.m.). The Huskies, who have lost four straight, have not played since Dec. 16; their non-conference finale with Colorado State and MAC opener with Akron were cancelled and postponed, respectively.
An 11-point second-quarter run allowed the Bulls to pull into a 49-36 halftime lead. The Chippewas drew to within six, 70-64, after three quarters, but Buffalo scored the first four points of the fourth quarter to extend its advantage to 10, 74-64, and CMU never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Molly Davis and Jahari Smith both finished with a double-double to lead CMU, which committed a season-high 27 turnovers and the Bulls converted those turnovers into 34 points.
Davis led with 23 points and 12 assists, while Smith finished with 19 points and 17 rebounds. It was a career high in assists for Davis and a career best in rebounds for Smith.
CMU freshman guard Tiana Timpe finished with a season-high 17 points, hitting five of her 10 3-point attempts.
