Chippewas collect 30 hits in Saturday doubleheader
The 23rd-ranked Mountaineers got a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to take the nightcap, 8-7, and earn the split and end CMU's win streak at five games.
CMU (5-5) won Friday's series opener, 5-3. The Chippewas collected a combined 35 hits in winning the series and continued to get solid pitching from their starters and their bullpen.
"Obviously a disappointing finish to the weekend," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "That said, it was an outstanding weekend for our program. We played our style of baseball at a high level throughout the weekend.
"West Virginia is talented and well coached; beating them in a series on the road is not insignificant. What makes it fun is how many contributors we had. I could not be more pleased with how we functioned as a team this weekend. It was great to see some really good hitters start to get on track."
Game 1
The Chippewas scored all of their runs in two innings, five in the fourth and seven in the seventh, building a 12-0 lead to back starter and winner Andrew Taylor (2-1).
Taylor, a redshirt freshman right-hander, threw 6 1/3 innings of three-hit shutout ball, striking out 11 and walking three. He has surrendered just one earned run while striking out 25 in 18 1/3 innings on the season.
"Andrew Taylor was phenomenal again today," Bischel said. "It is fun to watch him continue to develop."
Zach Gilles, Danny Wuestenfeld, Zach Lechnir and Justin Simpson had two hits apiece for the Chippewas. Simpson and Kade Preston drove in two runs apiece.
Rollin and Preston had the big hits. Rollin had a two-run double in the fourth inning, and Preston had a two-run double in the seventh.
Game 2
Mikey Kluska hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th off Grant Frazer to lift the Mountaineers in the nightcap.
Frazer (0-2), the third Chippewa pitcher, struck out four and walked one over three innings.
"It was a disappointing finish, but we hope to have Grant Frazer right back in that exact same situation the next time we play," Bischel said. "Tip the cap to West Virginia. Grant made one mistake and they hit it out of the park."
The Chippewas scored three runs in the first inning and two in the second in seizing a 5-1 lead, but the Mountaineers responded with a run in the second and three in the third to tie it, 5-5. Each team scored a run in the sixth to make it 6-6, and the Chippewas went up, 7-6, in the top of the 10th on a Marsee two-out RBI double.
Marsee, a redshirt freshman, had three hits to complete a 6-for-11 day. Gilles also had three hits, while Mario Camilletti and Zach Heeke added two each; Wuestenfeld and Drew Lechnir each tripled. Marsee and Camilletti drove in two runs apiece.
Chippewa starter Cameron Brown allowed five runs on four hits over four innings. Garrett Navarra worked two innings in relief, surrendering one run on two hits before giving way to Frazer. The three Chippewa pitchers combined to strike out nine.

The Chippewas open a four-game nonconference series at Dayton on Thursday, March 18.
"We will shoot to have a great week of preparation before heading down to Dayton next weekend," Bischel said.
