SMOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan softball team is scheduled to open Mid-American Conference play this weekend with a four-game series at Bowling Green.
The teams are scheduled to play the opener on Friday (3 p.m.) followed by a Saturday doubleheader (1 p.m.). The series is set to conclude on Sunday (noon). Spectators will not be allowed to attend the games.
The Chippewas are 2-7. They went 1-2 at the season-opening Tennessee Invitational and then finished 1-5 in The Spring Games in Leesburg, Fla. Of the Chippewas' five losses in Florida, four came by one run, the other by two.
"Every game we lost, we were a hit away from winning," second-year CMU coach McCall Salmon said after the trip. "We're a bounce here, a call there, we're a hit here – it's so close. There's a lot of things, intangibles; we're going to start putting things together."
The Chippewas
Freshman Abbey Tolmie leads the Chippewa regulars in hitting with a .345 batting average, while seniors Shaidan Knapp (.308) and Morgan Gardner (.300) both top the .300 mark. Sophomore Emily Bracamonte leads the Chippewas with six RBI.
Freshman Michaleigh Vallimont has started each of the Chippewas' last three games and has produced three hits including a double and two RBI in 10 at-bats over that span.
Freshman right-hander Grace Lehto has started five of the Chippewas' nine games in the circle. She is 2-4 with a 3.09 earned run average. She has completed all five of her starts and struck out 36 in 34 innings.
The Chippewas are hitting .234 as a team, tied for sixth in the MAC; their team ERA is 4.47, which ranks seventh in the MAC.
Scouting
Bowling Green is 8-7 after an 8-7 victory at Dayton on Wednesday.
The Falcon pitching staff, led by freshman Payton Gottshall, ranks second in the MAC with a 3.24 ERA. The Falcons rank fifth in the MAC in hitting with a .239 team batting average.
Gottshall is 8-3 with a 1.31 ERA. She leads the MAC in both wins and ERA. Earlier this season, she struck out a program-record 20 in a victory over Cleveland State and then followed with a perfect game in a 2-0 win over the Vikings. It was the second perfect game in Bowling Green history.
