Chippewas collect 21 hits in improving to 7-6
Andrew Taylor struck out a career-high 14 and the Chippewa bats staked him to a 4-0 lead as CMU won the opener, 5-4.
CMU scored four runs in the fourth inning and six in the fifth en route to a 13-3 victory in the nightcap.
The Chippewas, who dropped Friday's series opener, 3-1, on a walk-off homer by the Flayers, improved to 7-6. The teams are scheduled to conclude the series on Sunday (1 p.m.).
"Give credit to Dayton (on Friday)," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said. "They did things better than we did. I thought we just didn't play our style of baseball to a level we expect of ourselves and we did a good job of re-setting and getting back to it today. The guys did a good job.
"We competed better. We came out a lot sharper in game one, played a little bit of defense, got a bunch of base hits early."
Game 1
Taylor (3-1), a redshirt freshman right-hander, allowed two runs on five hits over six innings in continuing his outstanding start to the 2021 season.
"Andrew, he's going to give us a chance to win every time out, and he did it again today," Bischel said.
Logan Buczkowski pitched in relief before giving way to junior right-hander Grant Frazier, who went the final 2 1/3 innings for his first save of the season. Frazer survived a rocky ninth during which he surrendered two runs on four hits, struck out two, and then induced a game-ending double-play ball.
It was an important result for Frazer, who last weekend surrendered a walk-off homer in an 8-7 loss at West Virginia.
"I'm really happy for him," Bischel said. "He pitched well for two innings. In the ninth, there was a one misplayed ball in the outfield and they hit a couple balls hard. But I had told the team last weekend after the West Virginia series that the next time we had a lead late that's the guy that I wanted to give the ball to, and I was glad that we could get him back in that situation again."
The Chippewas collected 12 hits, all singles. They built a 4-0 lead through three innings, getting RBI singles from Mario Camilletti, Danny Wuestenfeld, Zach Gilles and Drew Lechnir.
CMU added an insurance run – one that turned out to be critical – on a run-scoring single by Kade Preston in the ninth.
Jakob Marsee, Gilles and Drew Lechnir had two hits apiece.
Game 2
Gilles had three hits and tied his career high with four RBI and Chase Rollin also had three hits to lead the Chippewas' nine-hit attack.
Gilles ripped two-run singles in both the fourth inning and in the fifth and Marsee had a run-scoring double – CMU's only extra-base hit of the day – in the fifth.
Senior right-hander Cameron Brown (2-0) held Dayton to two runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out three over five innings for the win. He left with the Chippewas leading, 12-2. Redshirt freshman Clayton Brock and freshman Ben Vitas each worked an inning of relief.
The game was called after seven innings.
"Cam did a really nice job," Bischel said. "He definitely could have gone deeper in the game, but just based on the score and having some pitching depth we felt like it was a good chance to get a couple of young guys some action there and they did a nice job."
