MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan golf team is headed to the St. Louis area for the Southern Illinois Diane Daugherty Invitational at Greenbriar Hills Country Club.
The 16-team, 54-hole stroke-play event is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Monday. The second round is set for Monday afternoon and the third and final round is scheduled for Tuesday morning.
The Chippewas will face a strong field, led by Arkansas State, which is ranked 92nd nationally. Also in the field are several teams that are in the same ranking neighborhood as the Chippewas, including No. 134 Illinois State, No. 137 Missouri State, and No. 155 South Dakota. CMU is ranked 146th.
"We've got to play well across the board to have a good showing in this field," CMU coach Jim Earle said. "The field will be our toughest test so far. There are some really good teams teeing it up and (we've) got to play some pretty good golf and stay in the moment. It'll be a good test for us for sure.
"They're not unbeatable by any stretch of the imagination. I think it's a good experience for us to play in this field because I think it will best represent the challenge we'll face at the MAC Championships."
The Chippewas will play without one of their top players, freshman Ashley Goh. Another of their top talents, sophomore Claudia Salvador, has opted out this semester.
Last week the Chippewas went 3-0 to win the Battle at Boone Match Play in Florence, Ky. and then finished third in an 11-team field at the Cleveland State Nevel Meade Collegiate in Prospect, Ky.
They finished with a 54-hole 908 total in the Meade; a good, but not great, score.
"We posted some OK scores, but we weren't able to contend like we really should have," Earle said. "It's sort of a mixed bag; I'm not overly disappointed, but I know how much better this team is. … We can do much better."
