MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan baseball team heads to DeKalb, Ill. this weekend for a four-game Mid-American Conference series with Northern Illinois at the Huskies' Ralph McKinzie Field.
The Chippewas split their MAC-opening series at Ohio last weekend, winning the final two games of the series and outscoring the Bobcats, 26-5, in that span. CMU dropped the opener, 5-1, and then the second game, 4-3.
CMU is 10-8, 2-2 MAC. Northern Illinois is 5-14, 4-4. The Huskies took three out of four at Kent State on their league-opening weekend, and then dropped three of four at Miami (Ohio) last weekend.
The series is scheduled to open on Friday (3 p.m.) and the game serves as NIU's home opener. The teams are slated to play a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.) and are slated to close the series on Sunday (1 p.m.).
Looking Back
Despite splitting the series at Ohio, the Chippewas got solid pitching all weekend, capped by senior J.T. Rogoszewski's solid start in Sunday's finale. He allowed four runs on three hits and struck out five over six innings.
Cameron Brown went the distance in the Chippewas' first win of the series and the Chippewas got quality starts from Jordan Patty and Andrew Taylor in dropping the first two games of the set. The staff earned run average was 3.60 in the four games with the Bobcats.
Sensational Start
Through 18 games, CMU center fielder Zach Gilles leads the MAC in hitting at .433 and has driven in a team-high 18 runs.
Power Surge
The Chippewas hit two home runs at Ohio last weekend, bringing their season total to three. Senior Chase Rollin hit his first career homer, a three-run shot, in the series finale and redshirt freshman Jakob Marsee blasted his second-career grand slam in CMU's win in the third game of the set.
Despite the relative dearth of power, the Chippewas lead the MAC with 134 runs. They also lead the league in hitting (.289), walks (110) and on-base percentage (.425) and their team ERA (4.19) ranks third in the league as does their fielding percentage (.974).
Scouting
The Huskies rank 10th in the league in both hitting (.230) and ERA (5.35). Defensively, the Huskies have committed a league-high 25 errors and are 10th in the conference with a .961 fielding percentage.
