MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan baseball team goes to South Bend, Ind. on Tuesday (5 p.m.) for a nonconference game with 10th-ranked Notre Dame at the Fighting Irish's Frank Eck Stadium.
The Chippewas are 17-9 after winning three of four from Bowling Green over the weekend at CMU's Keilitz Field at Theunissen Stadium. The Chippewas are 9-3 and in second place in the Mid-American Conference, one game behind Ball State.
Notre Dame is 15-6, 14-6 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Irish are in second place in the ACC Atlantic. Notre Dame took two of three at home from Georgia Tech over the weekend.
Since opening the season 0-4, the Chippewas are 17-5 and have won nine of their last 10 games. They are 9-1 in league play since opening with back-to-back losses at Ohio.
CMU is approaching the midway point of the season.
"They're competing well," CMU coach Jordan Bischel said of his players on Sunday after closing the Bowling Green series with a doubleheader sweep. "I have no idea how the standings are going to shake out, but a month or so ago we had a pretty challenging injury (to catcher Griffin Lockwood-Powell) and got off to a slow start with conference play.
"You add it all together and we've done a nice job for the first half of the season. There's a bunch of games you could circle and say, 'Man I wish we had that one back or this one back;' but on the whole I would say the results have been more positive than negative and I'm proud of the group and what they're doing and now it's just back at it for the next week."
The Chippewas pitching staff was outstanding in their series with Bowling Green. They threw three complete games against the Falcons and struck out 31 while walking nine combined in the four games.
Senior right-hander J.T. Rogoszewski is scheduled to start for the Chippewas; Notre Dame will counter with sophomore righty Liam Simon.
The Chippewas resume MAC play this weekend when they entertain Kent State in a four-game series at Theunissen. The opener is scheduled for Friday (3 p.m.).
