Chippewa Baseball Continues Quest For League Crown With Trip To Kalamazoo

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan baseball team returns to its quest for a second-consecutive Mid-American Conference championship this weekend when it goes to Western Michigan for a four-game series at the Broncos' Robert J. Bobb Stadium.
The Chippewas defeated Northwood, 5-1, in a nonleague game on Tuesday. Last weekend, they split with Ball State, their chief rival for the league title, in a four-game series in Mount Pleasant.
CMU is 31-13 overall and leads the MAC at 22-6. The Chippewas hold a one-game lead over Ball State in the conference standings. The Cardinals are 21-7 in league play. They entertain Kent State in a four-game MAC series this weekend.
Western Michigan is 17-21 and is third in the MAC at 16-12, 5 ½ games behind the Chippewas. The series is scheduled to begin on Friday (3 p.m.).
CMU is scheduled to play its final home series of the season the following weekend when Eastern Michigan visits Mount Pleasant for a four-game MAC set. CMU closes the regular season at Toledo from May 28-30.
There is no MAC Tournament this season. The regular-season champion will receive the league's bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Chippewas rank second in the MAC with a 3.43 team earned run average, are tied for fourth with a .272 batting average, and share the league lead with Ball State with a .973 fielding percentage.
CMU's Andrew Taylor and Jordan Patty rank first and second, respectively, in the MAC in ERA; Taylor's is 1.58, while Patty's is 1.82. Taylor has allowed a league-low 14 runs this season and his wins (8) lead the MAC and is tied for sixth nationally.
The Chippewas lead the nation with 283 walks, led by junior second baseman Mario Camilletti, who tops the nation with 51. The top four MAC hitters in drawing walks are Chippewas: Zach Gilles (40) is second, Justin Simpson (34) is third, and Jakob Marsee (31) is fourth.
Camilletti has scored a MAC-best 45 runs, while Gilles and Marsee are tied for fourth with 40. Gilles ranks third in the MAC with a .366 batting average and is first with a .511 on-base percentage. The Chippewas lead the MAC and rank sixth nationally with a .419 on-base percentage.
