Wheeler Heads To NCAA Championships

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The best of the best. Quiara Wheeler is there, and she is looking to reach the pinnacle.
Wheeler, a Central Michigan junior, will compete in the hammer throw on Thursday in the NCAA Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus.
Wheeler is the 12th seed of the 24 student-athletes in the event. The seedings are based on performance at the NCAA Preliminaries. Wheeler's best throw at the East Preliminary at North Florida two weeks ago was a program-record 64.90 meters (212 feet, 11 inches). She finished in eighth place.
The hammer throw is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. (ET).
The top eight finishers at the NCAA Championships earn First Team All-America honors; those finishing ninth-16 are second team; and those finishing 17th-24th are honorable mention. Each student-athlete in the event has three throws; those with the top nine throws advance to the final, where each receives three more throws.
"It's 100 percent her goal is to make the final because then you're (almost guaranteed to be) a First Team All-American," CMU coach Jenny Swieton said. "I don't think there's any reason why that's not possible.
"She's just going to give everything that she has, but I wouldn't be surprised if she (sets a personal record) by three meters. Obviously, that's a gamer changer as far as place goes."
Wheeler, who hails from Flint, finished 10th in the weight throw, earning Second Team All-America honors, at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.
"I think some people have that competitive ability to just step up when they need to," Swieton said. "I think Quiara is one of those people."
