DAYTON, Ohio -- In the final leg of the Flyer-Raider Invitational, the Central Michigan volleyball team fell short.
The Chippewas (5-4) were defeated in three sets by tournament co-host Dayton (4-4) on Saturday, 17-25, 24-26, 18-25 at the Frericks Center.
CMU is set to travel to East Lansing next weekend for the Spartan Invitational, with matches against Oakland, IUPUI, and Michigan State. The Chippewas are set to kick things off with Oakland at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17.
On Saturday against Dayton, three Chippewas held the lead for kills with seven: Savannah Thompson, Linnea Willer and Sierra Gray. Thompson led the defense with 14 digs, while setters Grace Butler and Kendall Braate had 18 and 10 assists, respectively.
Set 1: CMU and Dayton sat neck-and-neck for the first 10 points, before the Flyers built up a lead from a run and forced a Chippewa timeout at 14-9. A series of spread out kills from CMU and a pair of kills from Savannah Thompson tightened up the score to 17-16, but Dayton secured eight of the next nine points to claim the set.
Set 2: The Chippewas put forth a strong offensive power, taking an early lead before the Flyers turned the tide midway through the set. After a CMU timeout at a 19-16 deficit, the Chippewas grabbed the next four points to seize a 20-19 lead. Dayton then claimed the set after a series of long rallies and point exchanges.
Set 3: The Chippewas and the Flyers went back and forth early on, before Dayton found a scoring streak to force a CMU timeout at 8-4. The second Chippewa timeout came at 16-8, after a struggle on the reception allowed the Flyers an ace. CMU found a few scoring opportunities throughout the remainder of the set, but an ace from Lexie Almodovar sealed the deal for Dayton.
